Are you looking to build your confidence as a vocalist? As your YYC voice teacher, I'm dedicated to helping emerging performers find their voice! One of the best ways to experience the joy of singing is by stepping onto a real stage and singing in front of a friendly crowd. Luckily, Calgary boasts a lively music scene with plenty of open mics, jam sessions, and karaoke bars where you can experience the joy of singing! Below, I’ve curated five great spots where vocal students can practice and shine. Read on to find the perfect match for your skill level and style!

1. The Alcove (Thursday Jams, 7-9 PM)

  • Address: 244 7 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2P 0W6

  • Event: Thursdays, 7-9 PM

  • Why It’s Great:

    • Judgment-free zone: Perfect for new singers looking for a safe space.

    • Caring & fun environment: Hosted by enthusiastic local musicians every Thursday.

    • Community focus: Meet fellow musicians.

The Alcove is great to and for beginners who want a relaxed atmosphere. The vibe is casual yet supportive, making it an excellent first step to conquer any stage fright.

Pro Tip: As a voice teacher, I recommend warming up with gentle vocal exercises in one of the adjacent rooms, and bring a friend to cheer you on—this extra boost of confidence goes a long way in a live setting!

2. Ironwood Stage & Grill (Open Mic Wednesdays at 7 PM)

  • Address: 1229 9 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0S9

  • Vibe: Cozy, rustic music lounge with a fantastic sound system.

  • Event: Open Mic every Wednesday at 7 PM

The Ironwood Stage & Grill is a Calgary music institution and a personal favourite for performers at any level. The crowd is typically laid-back but genuinely appreciates good music. From pop ballads to acoustic covers, you’ll find support and encouragement here.

Voice coach insight: Because Ironwood has excellent acoustics, it’s a good spot for testing more dynamic or nuanced vocal pieces. If you’re a singer interested in developing your stage presence and microphone technique, the Ironwood experience is invaluable.

3. NANTA Karaoke & Bar

  • Address: 512 6 St SW, Calgary, AB T2P 0S4

  • Vibe: Energetic, private karaoke rooms with a welcoming staff.

If you’re not entirely comfortable singing in front of a large audience yet, NANTA Karaoke & Bar offers private rooms so you can belt out your favourite hits in a more intimate setting. This is a fantastic way to hone your confidence without the pressure of a public audience.

Practice tip: Treat these private karaoke sessions like a mini performance—practice your stage presence, engagement and posture. Even without a massive crowd, these details can elevate your singing skills.

4. The Hideout (Open Mic Tuesdays, 7–10 PM)

  • Address: 380 Midpark Way SE, Calgary, Alberta T2X 3S4

  • Event: Every Tuesday from 7–10 PM

  • Vibe: Friendly, laid-back bar that celebrates local talent

Why Go: The Hideout’s open mic is a relaxed yet lively event perfect for showcasing new material—or simply getting your feet wet in front of a supportive audience. With a welcoming crowd and plenty of encouragement, you never know who might discover you here. Whether you’re a budding artist or an experienced performer, this weekly showcase offers a chance to sharpen your skills and enjoy some great company. You might just be Calgary’s next big thing!

If you want to feel the place first, The Hideout also has regular live music!

5. Higher Ground in Kensington (Open Mic Tuesdays, 6–9 PM)

  • Address: 1126 Kensington Rd NW, Calgary, AB

  • Event: Open Mic every Tuesday from 6–9 PM.

  • Vibe: Cozy coffeehouse atmosphere, ideal for laid-back performances.

Nestled in the heart of Kensington, Higher Ground offers a warm, low-pressure environment suited for acoustic sets, singer-songwriters, and those who appreciate a smaller stage. If you’re exploring your vocal style or trying out an original song, Higher Ground’s Tuesday open mic is an ideal spot.

Because it’s a coffee shop setting, the audience tends to be attentive but respectful—perfect if you’re still working on nerves. Plus, you can reward yourself with a delicious latte after a great performance!

Bonus tips for aspiring singers in Calgary - Open mic nights and jams are for singing!

  1. Leverage local hashtags & socials: If your goal is to get known as a local artist, when posting your performance videos, use hashtags like #YYCMusic, #CalgarySinging, and #CalgaryMusicians to reach a broader audience. I don't like this social media game but we have to play the game before we change it.

  2. Prepare your voice: "Easy-to-do-on-the-spot-if-you-don't-have-a-dressing-room" vocal warm-ups (lip trills, sirens, and scales) can make a noticeable difference in your clarity and pitch control.

  3. Song choice matters: Pick a song that complements your range and style. Confidence also stems from familiarity.

  4. Network with other artists and have fun: Building relationships with fellow singers and musicians can open doors for future gigs or collaborations.

  5. Consider professional lessons: If you want personalized feedback and faster progress, investing in voice lessons in Calgary can help you refine your technique and stage presence.
